Small-block Chevy engines have been shoved into everything from Ford street rods to Dixie Chopper lawnmowers. Given the availability of V6-to-V8 swap kits, replacing an anemic six-banger with a fire-breathing small-block is practically a bolt-in ordeal. This path is well-traveled and gets easier with every year of development. This project is more about choosing the right components than actually putting them together. Before swapping anything out, you're going to have to know what kind of engine to install.
It's not going to do you much good to have a horsepower street-devastator only to find that it's impossible to drive because of state smog laws. Many V8 conversions are surprisingly legal in most states, but with a few basic caveats. In most states, the engine used cannot be older than the chassis for emissions compliance.
If your state laws allow you to put a carbureted engine into your truck, then do it. There are at least a dozen different companies that make V6-to-V8 conversion kits that include motor mounts, exhaust headers and sometimes a transmission mount.
These kits give you the parts you'll need to physically fit the engine into the truck, but you're going to have to supply everything else. This includes any electrical components, cooling hoses, radiator and engine accessory drives. The most popular transmissions for this swap are the three-speed TH and overdrive R4s. The good new is that many V6s already come with the decent R4, but this transmission should only be used with a bone-stock small block.
Anything more powerful will rip the R4 to pieces. Don't even consider using a R4 older than or one that originally came behind the 2. The older transmissions aren't strong enough, and 2. This is a pretty straightforward engine swap. Ss and similar mini-trucks have plenty of room for a V8, and Camaros have always had a V8 option.
Simply replace the stock mounts and exhaust headers with those from your kit, drop the engine in and hook everything up. Of course, how complicated this will be depends on your application.
Dropping a carbureted into a S is a no-brainer, but it gets a little more complicated when you're talking about putting a LS7 into a Later-model fuel injected engines may require stand-alone fuel management of transmission management computers. Fuel injected engines will require a dedicated high-pressure fuel pump and system.

I have searched and everything is for the Lighter Duty 1" rotors. I have the HD 1. All of my front suspension stuff is new so i would like to do this without replacing too many parts. Please help. Honestly for the time of money that will cost the 5x5 rims might be cheaper then swapping lug patterns and buying rims. Have you looked around summit racing or jegs for the rims you want?
Both have a lot of them in 5x5 and the size you want. I'm not concerned about the rear bc I am building a 9" for it. I was concerned about the front and just like I figured, I will have to change out parts which I'm not going to do. It looks like I'll have to stick with the 5x5. The cost to send out my extra set of rallies to get them widened to 15x12 to try and save some money doesn't add up in the end.
Thanks for all the advice and talking some sense into me. There are plenty of wheels that I want in a 15x12 with a 5"BS but they are just a little pricier. Early wheel company says they have 15x12 for I thought all up truck rotors are 5 x 5, even the light duty models in the 80s with 1" wide rotors.
Other than re-drilling yours, you'd have to adapt passenger car rotors and maybe even spindles, and you'd end up with a very light duty setup. Retired as a factory automation products salesman. V6 to V8 Engine Conversion for a Chevy
I just got some nice wheels from a 54 pontiac for my truck and when I got home they wont fit right. The lugs fit the holes but they are tight to the inside of all the holes.
If I lobe these out a small bit will I have issues? They came with nice hub caps and there painted the same color as my truck! Yes, I have 5x4. Are the wheels "HUB-centric" registers on the hub or "LUG-centric" hole in wheel is larger than hub and lugs possistion it?
Bad idea! This shit is what gets people killed and gives the rest of us a bad rap. Get wheels that fit, don't mess with something so critical to safety. Low budget, likely that the wheels you ran were designed to run a ring on the outside which matched the correct bolt pattern for the wheels. The ring would contain the beveled edges to seat the lugnuts. Basket wires ran this set up years ago, very similar to some of the 1 ton Ford trucks and vans ran in recent years.
So, not only did you not run the correct bolt patternbut unknowingly, you also failed to use the correct reinforcing ring which strengthened the center of the wheel.

Bolt Pattern Cross Reference and Wheel Sizes
A bolt circle of 5 x 4. There are four important measurements that are used to categorize and identify a wheel for fitment purposes. If there is an EVEN number of lugs: Measure center-to-center on lugs directly across from each other. Alloy wheels should always be installed using a torque wrench ensuring proper mount.
Check your vehicle owner manual for specifications. Hub Center Bore: Relates to the center hole in the wheel that centers the wheel on the hub of the car. Since most wheels are mass produced, they have a large center bore to accommodate several different vehicles. If this is the case, it is recommended that you use a hub ring. Hub rings are hard plastic or metal ring that fits between the wheel and the vehicle.
This centers the wheel perfectly on the hub ensuring that there is no run out when the wheel is installed on to the vehicle. Wheel offset is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel to the true center line of the rim. This in effect brings the tire in to the fender well more. For owners of classic musclecars already equipped with a serviceable, original automatic, this will be the simplest and least expensive solution when doing an LS swap. Between the two options, a flexplate swap using the original converter will be cheaper, but considering that the new engine is likely going to have a very different powerband than the one coming out, a torque converter with a more aggressive stall speed is likely to be the more desirable way to go.
A properly built version can handle 25 percent more than that. The R4 represents a Rubicon between the old and new — while it gained an additional overdrive fourth gear and lockup torque converter capability over its TH ancestor, it retained mechanical, rather than electronic operation.
The R4 was renamed the 4L60 inthen evolved into the 4L60E when electronic control was added. Moving to an overdrive gearbox does have some special considerations to keep in mind in terms of space and controlling lockup and line pressure, though, and in the case of a fully electronic transmission, overall control. Your chosen transmission and engine combination will also determine what you need for transmission control. Factory-style LS throttle bodies have no provision for a kickdown or TV cable, so some degree of finagling and fabrication will be required to use a TH or R4.
Once you start mixing and matching engines, computers, and electronically controlled transmissions, though, you may end up wishing for a turn-key solution. Chevrolet Performance offers multiple transmission control systems for both factory-style EFI setups and carbureted LS engines, as well as 4L60 and 4Lbased performance automatic transmissions.
They are designed just like our LS fuel injected controller kits in that they are pre-calibrated to function after they are hooked up and plugged in. The software if you decide to use it is very easy to navigate and most people are able to make the changes they want without having to refer to the help section. Doing the transmission right for your particular LS swap will involve not just the big items like the gearbox itself, the crossmember, driveshaft, converter, and flexplate, but supporting components such as the shifter and control electronics.
Though aftermarket support for all aspects of doing an LS swap in popular vehicles is good and growing Holley is a good exampleyou can expect some level of fabrication and adaptation will be necessary.
